Information on the G4G8 gift exchange and exchange books.
The G4G Gift Exchange
The G4G Gift Exchange began at G4G1 with Scott Kim assembling a
collection of papers by participants and presenting them to Martin
Gardner. The exchange is a tribute to the shared curiosity that Martin
has fueled and we place special emphasis on creativity and originality.
The gift should be something you would personally give to Martin, and he
will personally receive what you give.
Rules of the Exchange
To receive other people's gifts you must give one yourself (to all other participants).
Two people presenting one gift only qualify as one participant in the
exchange and must decide who will receive the exchange gifts. If two
people present two gifts that would qualify as two participants in the
exchange, etc.
The organizers are the final arbiters of the exchange.
Physical Exchange gifts
Physical exchanges (for example, puzzles, models, artwork) will be handed out at the Gathering.
Please provide 300 examples for the gift exchange participants and
indicate who is contributing the gift, include the title and a short
description.
They should be sent to:
G4G8
c/o Scott Hudson - Direct Data Communication
5475 Fulton Industrial Blvd, SW
Atlanta, GA 30336

scott@directdatacomm.com
This is a commercial delivery address.
Submissions must be received by March 27, 2008 to ensure inclusion.
Direct Data Communication will prepare the gift bags to be handed out at
the end of the gathering. It is your responsibility to get your
exchange gift to Scott Hudson.
G4G8 Exchange Book
The G4G8 Exchange Book is for those who wish to submit papers as their
exchange gift and also for those who wish to include descriptions,
instructions, solutions etc. of their physical gifts. The book is 'self
published' in that the contributor pays for his or her own submission on a
per page basis. The length of submissions is self regulated by content
and the submitter's budget. The G4G7 Exchange book was over 700 pages in
2 volumes. The longest submission was 55 pages and the shortest 1 page.
There is a minimum fee for inclusion in the exchange book. Gathering 4
Gardner was recently incorporated as a non-profit educational
organization and funds in excess of production fees go to Gathering 4
Gardner not to the production company.
Your submission to the G4G8 Exchange Book grants Gathering 4 Gardner
copyright permission to reprint submissions only in bound complete
volumes and not as individual articles.
Submission deadline is April 15, 2008 - after the Gathering, but all
submissions must be paid for before the end of the Gathering to
participate in the exchange. If the length is unknown payment
arrangements must by finalized (credit card) with Gathering 4 Gardner at
the gathering. At least the minimum fee will be collected at the
gathering.
You must indicate the contributor's name(s), the title and a description
for the submission. The print format is 8.5" by 11" printed duplex
(front & back = 2 pages). Provide .75" margins.
The pages may be Black and White or Color and you may have both in your
submission.
Submission should be PDF format (high res with fonts embedded) because
fonts and images are included and don't have to be sent as separate
files. Any other format causes delays as G4G7 Exchange Book participants
are well aware.
Images should be CMYK format. DO NOT use 'rich black', if you want
black, just specify as black. Color corrections cause delays - see
above.
B/W pages should be 600 dpi, but anything over 300 dpi is overkill for
color and will be downsampled.
Fees
The minimum fee for a B/W submission is $100 and includes up to 4 B/W
page submissions. Cost is $12 per additional B/W page.
The minimum fee for a Color or mixed submission is $150 and includes 1
color page and up to 2 B/W pages. Cost is $75 per additional Color page
and $12 per additional B/W page. (Note: Rich Black is actually a blended
color and will be charged as color)
$30 of the above fee will be waived for Physical Exchange contributors
who wish to include an Exchange Book article about their Physical
Exchange.
The fee includes shipping to US addresses by USPS. Non US contributors
must cover shipping or make other arrangements (volunteers delivered
many G4G7 Exchange Books at various conferences).
As examples the fees for:
2 page (side) B/W paper would be $100
5 page B/W paper would be $112
or
1 page color + 1 page B/W would be $150
2 color pages would be $225
1 color page and 3 B/W pages would be $162
Special requirements (foldouts, lenticulars etc.) are priced on a case by case basis.
Again the deadline for Exchange Book submissions is April 15, 2008 (the
book will be shipped after the gathering)
Files can be sent to scott@directdatacomm.com if they are under 10 Meg
or FTP can be arranged. Scott will also be at G4G8 if you have
questions or need to deliver files personally.
